    Breaking the Bottleneck in Protein Expression: Perotin Bio and the Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology Co-Host a Specialized Training on Cell-Free Protein Expression Technology

    On June 11, 2026, Suzhou Perotin Biotechnology Co., Ltd. was invited to visit the Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, where it successfully hosted a specialized training session on cell-free protein expression technology. The event provided researchers with a comprehensive and highly efficient suite of solutions to address challenges in expressing difficult-to‑express proteins, membrane proteins, and toxic proteins, as well as to enable high‑throughput screening of novel enzymes and the rapid in vitro construction and functional validation of artificial metabolic pathways, thereby accelerating the progress of synthetic biology research projects.


     

     


     

    This training session was presented by Zhang Yiheng, Director of Biological Products at Perotin, and drew participation from numerous researchers at the Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology who are engaged in industrial biotechnology research. The program unfolded across three key dimensions—principles, applications, and hands-on practice—providing a systematic analysis of the core value of cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) technology.

    In the technical principles section, Director Zhang Yiheng began by outlining the evolutionary trajectory of CFPS technology, contrasting it with traditional expression systems such as E. coli, yeast, and mammalian cells. He then provided an in-depth explanation of the operational mechanisms of the in vitro transcription–translation system, highlighting the core advantages of cell-free systems: overcoming cellular physiological constraints and enabling rapid protein synthesis.

     

     

    During the application‑scenario sharing session, the focus was on addressing key challenges in the industrial biotechnology sector, with particular emphasis on the groundbreaking value of CFPS technology across four major areas: rapid screening and high‑throughput expression validation of novel enzymes can reduce the turnaround time from gene sequence to enzyme activity data to as little as one day; accelerated protein directed evolution shortens the DBTL cycle from weeks to days; in vitro synthesis of difficult‑to‑express toxic or membrane proteins overcomes cellular toxicity constraints; and site‑specific incorporation of non‑canonical amino acids offers a powerful new approach for expanding protein functionality and enabling precise protein labeling.

    At the conclusion of the training, a video demonstration provided a comprehensive overview of the entire workflow of the Perrotin PLD cell-free protein expression platform—covering everything from DNA templates (plasmids or PCR products) to protein production, as well as high-throughput screening on 96-well plates and methods for result analysis and evaluation—enabling researchers to gain an intuitive understanding of the key technical procedures.
